A campaign has been mounted to outlaw revenge porn. Not only embarrassing, at Igniyte, we believe revenge porn is an inherent risk to your online reputation.

Revenge Porn is an Attempt to Induce Maximum Humiliation

If you’ve not had the unfortunate pleasure of hearing of this new phenomenon, revenge porn is where ex-partners post sexually explicit media of their former lover online, without their express consent, in a bid to cause maximum humiliation.

That’s why campaigners, including former culture secretary Maria Miller, are now calling for the outlawing of revenge porn, which is recognised as a growing problem in the UK. 30 sites are already available for the posting of sexually explicit media. In the US, three states have already outlawed the practise.

A Desire to Cause Great Harm and Embarrassment

Miller makes a strong case, saying that “this is a form of sexual violence against women in our own country,” Miller further said that “the issue is explicit and nude pictures being posted on the internet without an individuals’ consent,” and that “these are not taken in a studio, they are taken in someone’s front room and clearly not meant for public release.”

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling is backing the campaign, and has commented that legislation is vital, because “revenge porn, like all domestic violence, is about control.” He further argued that “perpetrators use the threat of humiliating a woman by sharing intimate images or videos to keep women trapped in relationships; and they harass and intimidate women who have left them by posting such files online.”

Revenge Porn is a Severe Risk to Your Online Reputation

At Igniyte we would argue that revenge porn is so effective because it has the ability to embarrass the person to such a degree it can ruin their online reputation. Essentially, once private sexually explicit media is uploaded online, it can be impossible to remove, as it is replicated by a host of other websites within a span of minutes, along with the person’s name, and even their contact details.

That is why revenge porn is so damaging. The fact that your name is posted alongside it means that once it’s posted, that image has a high chance of turning up on page one of google for your search term. Furthermore, because these images spread like wildfire, they keep cropping up on page one because the minute one post is removed, another rises up to replace it.
